Chapman Grad is Finalist in Final Draft Big Break Competition
Brett Melnick (Chapman ’16) scored as one of two finalists in Final Draft’s competition for half-hour TV pilots. He will be singled out for recognition on Thursday, February 8, at the 13th Annual Final Draft Awards at the Paramount Theater at Paramount Studios along with the winner of the competition and an additional finalist.
Brett’s comedy pilot CHARM CITY CHEDDAR concerns a down-and-out Baltimore rapper who returns to his roots to rediscover his voice, taking on a young protégé along the way. Brett is the Writer's Assstant on the upcoming TBS comedy THE LAST OG. Brett, who graduated from Dodge College’s Television Writing and Production Program at Chapman, said he initially came up with the concept for his script in Lecturer Lee Marshall’s Television Writing Seminar class. “I’ve since revisited it a great deal after graduating to craft it to where it is now," Brett said. "But Lee was fundamental in pushing me to initially write the script.” According to Brett, Lee’s “support – paired with his genuine enthusiasm” is what inspired him to follow-up on the concept and write the script. “He was always around to talk through the process, and provided the support I needed to make this script the way it is.” Brett has completed his work as writers assistant on the first season of THE LAST OG. The comedy staring Tracy Morgan premiers on April 3. And he is currently wrapping up his work as an associate producer on three digital series for County Music Television. |
